We also provide embossing services for material already transcribed into Braille.
We train volunteers to become Braille transcribers: Midwestern Braille has a secondary mission to recruit volunteers and train them to transcribe BrailleBraille materials are in short supply because there are just not enough trained braille transcribers. The job of transcribing printed material into Braille is aided by modern computer programs and requires a great deal of expertise. We can help transcribers obtain the Library of Congress Certification through the National Federation of the Blind.
We depend on volunteers to help in every step of the Braille transcription process. Our volunteers are of all ages and skill levels. We have high school students fulfilling community-service assignments and retired people looking for a productive outlet for their spare time. We can use short-term temporary help or permanent volunteers
We are helping to fill a great need:Individuals who are blind rely on Braille for their reading materials. However, there is a limited supply of materials readily available. Due to the low volume and highly specialized nature of Braille transcription, there are very few commercial sources, consequently, most Braille material is provided through non-profit groups.Midwestern Braille Volunteers work in conjunction with a variety of services for blind readers such as: American Printing House for the Blind Missouri School for the Blind
We are a non-profit, volunteer service located in the St Louis suburb of Kirkwood Missouri supported by donations.
